How Tesla Diagnostics Works

Modern Teslas are built around tightly integrated software and hardware systems that require specialized diagnostic tools to properly evaluate. Generic OBD-II scanners cannot read most Tesla-specific fault codes, so accurate diagnosis depends on equipment that communicates directly with the vehicle's onboard computers, reading fault codes, analyzing live sensor data and evaluating battery module health. That diagnostic work is performed by our partner shop, not by Prime Towing LLC.

Where we come in is everything that has to happen first. If your Tesla is showing a warning on the touchscreen, has lost range, or is behaving strangely enough that you do not want to keep driving it, one call gets a flatbed to you and gets the vehicle to the shop for diagnosis. You are not calling a tow company and then separately hunting for somewhere in Houston that will take an EV.

Battery Health Checks & Service

The battery pack is the most critical and expensive component in any Tesla. Over time and mileage, individual cells can degrade unevenly, reducing the vehicle's total range and performance. A battery health check typically examines the pack's state of health, cell balance, thermal management performance and charging efficiency, with the aim of catching weak modules early, before they cause the cascading problems that lead to a costly full-pack replacement. Module-level diagnostics and any replacement work are carried out by our repair partner.

Prime Towing's part is the transport. A Tesla with a battery fault, a significant range drop or a pack-related warning belongs on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground rather than on a wheel-lift, and that is how we move every EV we pick up. We deliver it to the partner shop. What happens after that is between you and the shop that arrives.

Motor & Drivetrain Repair

Tesla electric motors are engineered for durability, but they are not immune to wear. Bearing failures, inverter faults and drive unit noise are issues that Houston Tesla owners encounter as their vehicles accumulate miles. Drive unit repair covers the front and rear motor assemblies, the reduction gearboxes and the high-voltage inverters that control motor output, and it ranges from a single bearing replacement to a full rebuild. All of that work is performed by our partner shop.

If your Tesla is producing grinding noises, vibrating at speed or has dropped into reduced power, the safest move is to stop driving it and call us. A drivetrain fault is a flatbed job, and getting the car to the shop on a truck rather than under its own power keeps a repair from turning into a bigger one.

Tesla Software Updates & Configuration

Tesla vehicles rely heavily on software to control everything from autopilot behavior to regenerative braking strength. When an update fails to install, when features stop functioning correctly, or when a hardware replacement needs recalibration afterwards so the modules communicate properly, that is software diagnostic work for the repair shop. Prime Towing does not perform software work of any kind. What we can do is move a car that will not move itself, including one stuck part-way through an update or unable to release its parking brake, and deliver it to our partner shop for assessment.

Suspension Repair & Upgrades

Houston roads can be tough on any vehicle, and Teslas are no exception. A Model S with air suspension that sags or will not level, or a Model 3 with control arm bushings and struts worn out by potholes, needs work on air springs, compressors, height sensors or conventional suspension components. Our partner shop handles those repairs. Prime Towing handles the vehicles that cannot make the trip: a car sitting on its bump stops with failed air suspension often cannot be loaded safely on a wheel-lift, which is one more reason we run flatbeds for this work.

EV Brake Service

Electric vehicles use regenerative braking to slow down, which means the traditional brake pads and rotors see less use than on a gas-powered vehicle. However, this can cause its own set of problems. Brake rotors on Teslas can develop surface corrosion and uneven wear when they are not engaged frequently enough, leading to pulsation and noise when you do need full braking force. Inspecting, resurfacing and replacing those components, and confirming the regenerative braking system is calibrated correctly, is shop work handled by our repair partner. If braking has degraded to the point where you would not trust the car across town, call for a tow rather than risking the drive to the appointment.

Charging Port Repair

A malfunctioning charging port can leave your Tesla stranded. Common causes include stuck charge port doors, latch mechanism failures, damaged pins or connectors, and communication errors between the vehicle and the charging station; the fix can run from the charge port assembly and actuator motor to the onboard charger module. That diagnosis and repair happens at our partner shop.

The part Prime Towing owns is the rescue. A Tesla that will not accept a charge at home, at work or at a public charger is one of the most common EV calls we get in Houston. We come out with a flatbed, put the vehicle in Transport Mode where it can still enter it, load it with all four wheels off the ground, and deliver it to the partner shop.

Tesla Body Panel Repair & Aluminum Construction

Tesla vehicles use an aluminum-intensive body structure, and aluminum does not repair like steel. It calls for different welding and bonding methods, dedicated tooling, and separation from steel work to avoid cross-contamination, which is why collision damage on these cars is usually routed to a shop set up specifically for it. It is a fair question to put to any body shop directly before you authorize work. Prime Towing LLC does not perform body or paint work of any kind.

What we do is recover the vehicle. Whether it still rolls or has to be winched onto the deck, a damaged Tesla goes on a flatbed and we take it to our partner shop for an estimate. If you or your insurer would rather use a different body shop, tell us and we will tow it there instead. The choice of shop is always yours.
